How does one become certified in holistic medicine, herbology, or natural healing?

I have been reading reading up on Holistic Medicine and natural healing and I have heard of people that are certified herbalists and have their own health store and set up appointments with clients. Do those people have a certificate that they studied for online or did a mail order course or are they actually college educated in their field? Can one practice Holistic Medicine or tell people how to treat their ailments through vitamins and herbs without a college degree?

There is currently no standard regarding academic preparation. Anyone can call himself or herself a herbalist, an holistic practitioner, or a natural healer whether or not he or she knows squat about matters of health. There are books that pretend to educate people in the area of alternative medicine. All alternative medicine practitioners are quacks – but it’s a safer way to rip people off than robbing banks!

there are certified schools that will grant a degree in the field desired. I’m currently with Clayton College of Natural Health. I wish I would have done my homework and sought out other schools.
